About Rijden de Treinen
Rijden de Treinen is Dutch and literally translates to ‘Are the trains running?’. Rijden de Treinen is an independent website with travel information and background information about the Dutch railway network.
An important part of Rijden de Treinen is the information about the current service status on the Dutch railways. You can view current service disruptions, planned engineering works, live departure times for all Dutch railway stations, or use the journey planner to plan a journey to or within the Netherlands.
You may be interested in historical service disruptions on the Dutch railway network or in statistics about the number of service disruptions. The historical archive might come in handy when claiming compensation for train delays.
Travel information on the go
Rijden de Treinen also keeps you informed on the go! Download the NL Train Navigator app for Android and iOS to receive information about service disruptions, to view real time train departure times, or to plan a journey. The app is available for free in the Google Play Store and on the Apple App Store. It is fully available in English.

History
Rijden de Treinen was founded in 2010 by Geert Wirken.
He was standing at Utrecht Central Station in winter when all trains were cancelled due to a snowstorm and there was no travel information available. After finally arriving home hours late and thoroughly frustrated, he registered the domain name rijdendetreinen.nl ("are the train running"). Just a few days later, the first version of the website went live.
Although the original version started as a tongue-in-cheek response to the poor travel information provided by the Dutch Railways (NS), the website quickly gained popularity. It wasn’t long before it expanded with real-time departure times, a journey planner, and an archive of train disruptions. Later, more features were added, including statistics on train disruptions, open data, the train archive, and extensive information on international train travel and train tickets. And of course, the app for Android and iOS. Over the years, the target audience of Rijden de Treinen has remained the same: the regular train passenger, whether it’s an experienced commuter who takes the train daily or someone taking the train for the first time in years.
Geert still works on Rijden de Treinen in his spare time. In daily life, Geert is CEO and energy expert at Keuze.nl. Keuze.nl is one of the major Dutch price comparison websites for energy contracts, internet subscriptions, and insurance.
